The Convenience of the Interweb
Friday, April 27th, 2012The widespread use of the internet in homes and offices alike has made many aspects of our lives considerably easier. Although there is a risk of a decrease in social interaction, it is undeniably more convenient for us to be able to perform tasks from our own homes or our desks, without the need to travel.
In the past, if we needed to check a fact, we often had to visit our local library. Nowadays, a simple internet search can usually provide us with all the information we need. Similarly, if we wanted to contact somebody who was not in the same building, the options were limited. A telephone call was previously the only way of communicating instantly at any distance, but this becomes costly if you have to speak to a number of people in the course of a day, or even if you simply want a long chat with a friend.
The alternative was through the post. This had the advantage of being cheaper if you had a lot to say, but waiting for a reply could take upwards of three days, which is not helpful if you need the information right now. E-mail lets us contact anyone, anywhere, and is almost instantaneous. It is also free within any broadband package, and you can type as much as you like without incurring extra costs.
Trailing around the shops on a Saturday has also become more of a luxury than a necessity. With almost every high street store having an online presence, we can now shop to our hearts content from the comfort of our own homes, and usually twenty four hours a day.
Grocery shopping can also be done online now, which means no more carrying heavy bags home every week. For very reasonable delivery costs, we can have all our food and household goods arrive on our doorsteps the day after we order them. The delivery charges are often less than we would have spent on petrol driving to the supermarket, and we no longer have to face the harsh lighting or screaming children often found in major grocery outlets.
Gambling has also become more accessible with the advent of the internet. While most people like the excitement of a flutter on the horses, or a game of blackjack, casinos and bookmakers can be fairly intimidating places; traditionally male-dominated environments, first-time bettors are often put off by having to enter. Casinos online offer all the fun of the real casino, but take away the fear factor. They are perfect for beginners, as you can often practice for play money, and they let you experience the thrill of gambling without the inconvenience of having to find and enter a venue.
